Inaugurated in April 2010 by the Union Minister of State for Forest & Environment, the museum was established under the National Bamboo Mission. Situated on the banks of the Kolong River, it serves to showcase the ecological and economic significance of bamboo in Assam. The institution promotes bamboo-based cottage industries and preserves traditional craftsmanship.
The collection consists of diverse bamboo-based products, utility crafts, and traditional household items. It features furniture, fishing gear, musical instruments, and agricultural tools, reflecting the life of communities whose livelihoods depend on bamboo.
Ahom-Style Bamboo Artifacts: The museum uniquely showcases specialized products developed through the National Mission on Bamboo Applications (NMBA), including modern industrial applications alongside traditional Ahom-era bamboo craft techniques.

| Notes | The museum was modeled after international bamboo centers (specifically inspired by Chinese bamboo industries) to help modernize local craft. A production center and retail outlet were planned as part of the complex to link artisans directly with the market. |
