Museum Introduction

Established in 1899, the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KSO) is an iconic institution managed by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. It is home to an astronomy museum that provides visitors with a window into more than a century of solar research, including the historic discovery of the Evershed Effect. The museum offers a structured guided experience to educate the public on solar phenomena and celestial observation.

General Collections

The museum features historical astronomical instruments, pictorial representations of the solar system, and large-scale diagrams explaining solar physics. It includes a comprehensive display of solar data spanning over 100 years, captured in multiple wavelengths.

Unique Historical Collections

The museum showcases a unique long-term series of solar data that is among the longest in the world. It provides a rare opportunity to view a Live Solar Image (weather permitting) and specialized exhibits on solar magnetism and the sun's spectral lines.

Notes The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory Museum operates under strict institutional guidelines to ensure the integrity of its ongoing scientific research. Visitors are restricted to demarcated museum areas and coordinate-guided paths, with each visit limited to a maximum duration of 90 minutes. For organized educational groups and schools, the administration requires a formal request via their official portal at least 15 days in advance. Notably, the facility offers a night sky observatory for public viewing during clear weather, typically on Thursday and Friday nights, though this is subject to institutional approval. As a specialized resource, the museum also provides "Educational Visit Certificates" for recognized academic institutions upon completion of their tour.
