Museum Introduction

Established in 1967 and located within the historic fort premises of Kittur, this museum is dedicated to the memory of Rani Chennamma (1778–1829), the Queen of Kittur who led an armed rebellion against the British East India Company in 1824. The museum is housed in a building designed to reflect local architectural heritage and serves as a repository for the administrative and military history of the Kittur Principality, as well as the broader archaeological heritage of the Belagavi district.

General Collections

The museum features a diverse array of artifacts recovered from the Kittur Fort excavations and surrounding regions. The collection is categorized into stone sculptures, hero stones (viragals), weapons, wood carvings, and inscriptions. It also includes a gallery dedicated to the lifestyle and lineage of the Kittur Desai family.

Unique Historical Collections

Highlights include 12th-century Kadamba-style sculptures and rare inscriptions from the Kalyani Chalukya period. A prized exhibit is the collection of weapons used during the 1824 Kittur revolt, including swords, shields, and flintlock guns. It also houses an intricately carved wooden door and pillars salvaged from the dilapidated Kittur Palace.
