Established in June 2018 by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB), this museum is housed in a renovated 19th-century heritage boathouse at Vallakkadavu. It was designed to create awareness about the state's rich natural heritage and the urgent need for conservation. The museum offers an immersive experience, tracing the story of life from the Big Bang to the complex ecosystems of the modern day.
The museum utilizes a mix of traditional and high-tech exhibits, including life-size models of animals, dioramas of various forest types, and interactive touchscreens. The collection covers diverse themes such as marine life, avian diversity, medicinal plants, and the cultural interface between tribal communities and their environment.
Features the "Science on a Sphere" (SOS) system—a room-sized global display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a giant animated sphere, including real-time NASA climate data. It also houses a comprehensive display of traditional rice varieties of Kerala and a dedicated gallery for endangered and endemic species of the Western Ghats.
