Located in the Shahibaug area within a colonial-era mansion built in 1905, this museum is a tribute to the legacy of the industrialist and philanthropist Kasturbhai Lalbhai. The complex, which includes the main ancestral home and a modern wing designed by architect Rahul Mehrotra, was restored and opened to the public in 2017. It serves as a repository for the family's extraordinary collection of Indian art, spanning over a thousand years.
The collection is diverse, featuring Persian and Mughal miniatures, stone and bronze sculptures, and traditional textiles. The modern wing houses contemporary Indian art, while the main house preserves the domestic atmosphere of a refined Ahmedabad merchant family, integrated with high-caliber artistic masterpieces.
The museum is famous for its collection of Pahari and Deccani miniatures, and rare paintings from the Tagore family (including works by Rabindranath, Abanindranath, and Gaganendranath Tagore). It also houses significant Jain bronzes and stone carvings from the Gupta and Kushan periods.
