Museum Introduction

Founded in 1981 by the visionary industrialist, author, and textile scientist Kasthuri Sreenivasan, this institution is a unique cultural landmark in "the Manchester of South India." It was established under the Kasthuri Sreenivasan Trust to promote art and provide a historical perspective on the textile industry. The complex serves as a bridge between the technical evolution of weaving and the aesthetic world of fine arts.

General Collections

The museum is divided into two major wings: the Textile Museum and the Art Gallery. The textile section chronologically traces the evolution of spinning and weaving from the prehistoric era to the modern age. The art gallery features a diverse range of Indian paintings, sculptures, and traditional crafts, including a dedicated section for emerging contemporary artists.

Unique Historical Collections

The museum houses a world-class collection of traditional Indian sarees and textiles representing every state of India. A standout feature is the "History of Costume" gallery, which displays life-sized mannequins showcasing the evolution of Indian attire through various dynasties and centuries. It also preserves original handlooms and primitive spinning wheels from different global cultures.
