Museum Introduction

Established as a state branch of the Central Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, this institution is located at Gandhi Bhavan in Kumara Park East. It was founded to propagate the life, work, and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, with a particular focus on his various visits to Karnataka. The building was inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad in 1959 and serves as a quiet sanctuary for Gandhian study and reflection in the middle of the bustling city.

General Collections

The museum houses an extensive photographic gallery that chronologically documents Gandhiji’s life from his childhood in Porbandar to his final days. It includes a specialized section detailing his influential tours through Karnataka, specifically his stay at Nandi Hills and his interactions with regional leaders and the public in cities like Belagavi and Mysuru.

Unique Historical Collections

The museum preserves rare correspondence between Mahatma Gandhi and prominent personalities from Karnataka. It also features a collection of Khadi products and spinning wheels (Charityas) used during the freedom movement, along with a library containing over 10,000 volumes of Gandhian literature, including the "Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi."
