Located within the historic Kangla Fort the traditional seat of the Meitei rulers the Kangla Museum was established to document the 2,000-year-old history of the Kingdom of Manipur. The museum serves as a repository for the archaeological remains and cultural heritage recovered from the fort premises, highlighting the fort's significance as both a political powerhouse and a sacred spiritual site.
The museum features a wide array of artifacts including ancient stone inscriptions, royal regalia, traditional weaponry (swords, shields, and spears), and historical maps of the Manipur kingdom. It also contains detailed models of the original fort structures that were destroyed during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
The museum houses the Royal Boat (Hiyang Hiren), an exquisitely carved traditional Meitei racing boat believed to possess spiritual powers. It also displays rare portraits of the Manipuri kings (Meidingus) and documents related to the genealogy of the Ningthouja dynasty.
