Jointly established in 1965 by Ava Devi and Bhopal Rao Sett, this gallery is the only one of its kind in the Darjeeling hills. It is dedicated to preserving the life's work of Ava Devi, a renowned artist celebrated for her innovation in embroidery and various painting mediums. The gallery is housed in a distinctive purple and yellow building on the outskirts of town.
The permanent collection features approximately 60 pieces of artwork, including water and oil paintings. A significant portion is dedicated to "thread paintings" and embroidery, along with traditional paintings, silk appliqué, and various local handicrafts.
Fine Embroidery & Thread Paintings: The gallery is famous for its intricate embroidery work where silk threads are split up to 20 times to achieve the finesse of a painting. Key historically and artistically significant works include the pieces titled "Still Strong" and "Torture".
