Museum Introduction
Established in 2008 by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) in collaboration with the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, the Kalimpong Science Centre is situated on Deolo Hill. It was founded to communicate science and technology to the general public, particularly students in the hilly regions of North Bengal. The centre serves as a vital hub for non-formal science education through interactive exhibits and outdoor activities.
General Collections
The centre features three primary indoor galleries: the Fun Science Gallery, the Digital Gallery, and the 3D Movie Theatre. Its collection includes interactive models covering physics, chemistry, and mathematics, as well as an extensive outdoor "Science Park" with large-scale exhibits demonstrating mechanical principles.
Unique Historical Collections
While primarily futuristic, the centre houses a dedicated section on the Ecological History of the Himalayas, featuring dioramas and models of regional flora and fauna, and a specialized display on the geology of the Darjeeling-Kalimpong hill range.
