Museum Introduction

Located within the Amaravathi Heritage Centre complex, this specialized museum is dedicated to the ancient art of Kalamkari (hand-painted or block-printed cotton textiles). It was established to document the two distinct styles of Kalamkari : Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam and to showcase the historical significance of natural dyes and intricate craftsmanship that have made this art form globally famous.

General Collections

The museum houses a vibrant collection of textiles including wall hangings, scrolls, and sarees. The exhibits demonstrate the 23-step process of Kalamkari, showcasing various stages of treatment such as bleaching, mordanting, and the application of natural pigments like indigo, madder, and pomegranate skin.

Unique Historical Collections

The museum features rare "narrative scrolls" that depict scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata in the Srikalahasti style. It also preserves 19th-century wooden blocks used for printing and detailed documentation of the organic chemical reactions involved in the natural dyeing process.
