Museum Introduction

Formerly known as the Kalachakra Museum, this institution was renamed the Amaravathi Heritage Centre and Museum. It was inaugurated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2006 during the Kalachakra Maha Sammelan. The museum was established to preserve and showcase the profound Buddhist heritage of Amaravathi (ancient Dhanyakataka), which is traditionally believed to be the site where Buddha first revealed the Kalachakra Tantra.

General Collections

The two-floored museum houses a rare collection of Buddhist antiques and sculptures recovered from 12 different Buddhist sites across Andhra Pradesh. The collection primarily features limestone carvings, panels, and artifacts belonging to the Amaravathi School of Art, known for its distinctive "narrative" style.

Unique Historical Collections

The museum features a detailed, smaller-scale replica of the original Amaravati Mahachaitya Stupa, allowing visitors to visualize the grandeur of the ancient monument. It also houses a Bodhi Tree sapling brought from Bodhgaya and planted by the Dalai Lama during the 2006 ceremony.
