Inaugurated in 2018, Kala Bhoomi is a tribute to the legendary craftsmanship of Odisha. Spread across 12.68 acres, the museum was established by the Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Department of the Government of Odisha. The complex is built using local materials like laterite stone and terracotta, designed to resemble a traditional Odia household (Badaghar) with connecting courtyards.
The museum features eight functional galleries showcasing a vast range of Odisha's artisanal heritage. This includes Terracotta, Traditional Paintings (Pattachitra), Stone and Wood carvings, Metal crafts (Dhokra and Bell Metal), Natural Crafts, and a comprehensive collection of Pre-weaving and Handloom textiles.
The museum houses a rare collection of 18th and 19th-century Ganjapa cards (traditional playing cards) and intricately carved "Palm Leaf Manuscripts" (Talapatra Chitra) that detail ancient Odia literature and religious texts. It also features a unique display of the diverse tribal jewelry from the various indigenous communities of Odisha.
