Museum Introduction
Established in 1970 and housed in an iconic building designed by the master architect Charles Correa, Kala Academy is Goa’s premier apex body for the promotion of arts and culture. Situated on the banks of the Mandovi River, it serves as a multidisciplinary institution for music, dance, drama, and fine arts. The structure itself is a masterpiece of modernist architecture, designed to be an "un-building" that blends seamlessly with the tropical landscape.
General Collections
While it does not maintain a traditional archaeological collection, its "Art Gallery" hosts a rotating permanent-style collection of contemporary Goan art, award-winning entries from State Art Exhibitions, and works by faculty and students. It also includes an extensive library of rare books and manuscripts on performing arts.
Unique Historical Collections
The building features world-famous murals and illusions by the legendary cartoonist Mario Miranda, including virtual balconies and theater boxes painted inside the Dinanath Mangeshkar Kala Mandir to simulate an old-fashioned theater atmosphere.
