Museum Introduction

Established in 1940 by the Kamarupa Anusandhan Samiti and later taken over by the State Government in 1953, it is one of the premier museums in Northeast India. It serves as a central repository for the archaeological, historical, and cultural heritage of Assam.

General Collections

The collection includes stone and metal sculptures, terracotta objects, ancient coins (numismatics), inscriptions (epigraphy), traditional textiles, arms and ammunition, and ethnographic artifacts from various tribes.

Unique Historical Collections

Rare Sanchipat (agar bark) and Talpat (palm leaf) manuscripts; significant 10th-century stone sculptures from the Ambari excavation site; and Japanese bombs from World War II.

Notes The museum features life-size replicas of traditional tribal huts and houses a specialized library established in 1985 containing rare historical periodicals.
Artifacts Stone Nataraja (10th Century), Mahisasimardini Durga (granite), 5th-century copper plate inscriptions, Ahom-era cannons, and 2nd-century BC terracotta plaques.
