Established in 1940 by the Kamarupa Anusandhan Samiti and later taken over by the State Government in 1953, it is one of the premier museums in Northeast India. It serves as a central repository for the archaeological, historical, and cultural heritage of Assam.
The collection includes stone and metal sculptures, terracotta objects, ancient coins (numismatics), inscriptions (epigraphy), traditional textiles, arms and ammunition, and ethnographic artifacts from various tribes.
Rare Sanchipat (agar bark) and Talpat (palm leaf) manuscripts; significant 10th-century stone sculptures from the Ambari excavation site; and Japanese bombs from World War II.
