Museum Introduction

Established in 1993 as the 12th district museum of Tamil Nadu, the Government Museum, Krishnagiri is situated on Gandhi Road near Apsara Theatre. It was founded to preserve and promote the specific cultural, artistic, and historical heritage of the Krishnagiri district, functioning as both a tourist destination and a center for educational research.

The museum features a multi-disciplinary collection across galleries for Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Botany, and Zoology. The exhibits range from Paleolithic and Neolithic stone tools to medieval artifacts, regional handicrafts, and natural history specimens indigenous to the Eastern Ghats.

Unique Historical Collections

Hero Stones (Veeragals): A vast and significant collection of Hero Stones, which is the museum's primary highlight. Bimandappalli Hero Stone: A rare 11th-century stone from the reign of Chola King Rajamahendra (1062 CE) depicting a hero with his wife. Tribal Ethnology: Specialized displays of traditional objects and tools belonging to the Irula and Kurumba tribes of the region.
