Established in 1976, the Government Museum, Salem holds the distinction of being the first district museum in Tamil Nadu created through public initiative. It was initially formed by the District Collector, Thiru. A. M. Swaminathan, with the support of the local Contemporary Writers and Painters Association. Originally functioning under district administration, it was taken over by the State Department of Museums in 1979.
The museum features a wide array of galleries covering Archaeology, Anthropology, Ethnology, Numismatics, and Natural History (Botany, Zoology, and Geology). Its collections include sculptures, inscriptions, arms, musical instruments, philately, and contemporary paintings.
Hero Stones: A significant collection of stones depicting the valiant acts of local warriors and chieftains of the Salem region. Magadesan Peruvazhikal: A rare 10th-century inscription from Aragalur documenting the ancient national highway connecting Aragalur to Kanchi. Fibre Model of Dinosaur: A popular natural history exhibit alongside a collection of insectivorous plants and local flora/fauna specimens.
