Museum Introduction

Established in 1970 and opened to the public in 1971, the Government Museum, Madikeri is located within the historic Madikeri Fort (also known as Mercara Fort). It is uniquely housed in the former St. Mark's Church, an 1855 Gothic-style building constructed by the British. The museum was founded to collect and display the archaeological and cultural antiquities of the Kodagu (Coorg) region.

General Collections

The museum features a diverse array of artifacts including stone sculptures from the 11th century, ancient coins, traditional Coorgi costumes, and historical photographs. It also houses geological specimens, wood carvings, bronzes, and iron implements used by the local Kodava community and the British administration.

Unique Historical Collections

Field Marshal Cariappa Collection: A special section dedicated to Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, displaying various awards, honors, and gifts he received from international dignitaries. Gothic Architecture: The museum's setting in a preserved 19th-century church with stained glass windows provides a unique colonial backdrop for indigenous artifacts. Ancient Hero Stones: A collection of Veeragals (Hero Stones) and Mastigals documenting the martial history and social customs of the region.
