Established in 1968, the Government Museum and Art Gallery is a premier institution in North India, designed by the celebrated architect Le Corbusier. It was founded to house the significant share of artifacts received by India following the partition of the Panjab Central Museum, Lahore. The museum serves as a major cultural landmark in Chandigarh’s "Leisure Valley."
The collection is exceptionally diverse, featuring Gandhara sculptures, Pahari and Rajasthani miniature paintings, and modern Indian art. It also encompasses sections for metal ware, decorative arts, and a specialized numismatic collection ranging from ancient to medieval periods.
One of the most significant collections in the world, showcasing the Greco-Buddhist artistic style from the 1st to 5th centuries CE. Partition Heritage: A unique repository of historical artifacts and artworks that were physically divided between India and Pakistan in 1947. Le Corbusier Architecture: The museum building itself is a masterpiece of modernist architecture, specifically designed to utilize natural "top-lighting."
