Established in 1989 as the 8th district museum of Tamil Nadu, the Government Museum, Ooty is located in the historic Connemara Cottage at Stone House Hill. It was founded to preserve and showcase the unique cultural, archaeological, and natural heritage of the Nilgiris district. The museum serves as a vital educational center for understanding the region’s indigenous history and colonial evolution.
The museum features a multi-disciplinary collection across galleries for Archaeology, Anthropology, Ethnology, Numismatics, Geology, Botany, and Zoology. Key exhibits include stone sculptures, wood carvings, megalithic pottery, and comprehensive displays on the local ecology and wildlife of the Western Ghats.
Indigenous Tribal Artifacts: An extensive and distinctive collection of tools, ceremonial objects, and traditional attire (including Puthukuli shawls) belonging to the six major Nilgiri tribes: Todas, Kotas, Kurumbas, Irulas, Paniyas, and Kattunayakans. Stone House Context: The museum is situated in the vicinity of the "Stone House," Ooty’s first bungalow built in 1822 by John Sullivan, marking the start of the British settlement in the Nilgiris.
