Established in 1887 as the Victoria Hall Museum by Maharana Fateh Singh, the Government Museum Udaipur was relocated in 1968 to the Karna Vilas Palace within the City Palace complex. It is a state-run institution dedicated to preserving the archaeological finds, royal artifacts, and artistic legacy of the Mewar region.
The museum houses approximately 308 sculptures, 1,800 miniature paintings of the Mewar school, and a vast armory. The collection is organized into thematic galleries including a stone gallery, a painting gallery, an inscription gallery, and a specialized children’s gallery.
Inscribed Sculptures: A significant collection of stone carvings ranging from the 7th to the 16th century CE, predominantly sourced from temples in Kailashpuri (Eklingji). Mewar Miniature Masterpieces: Exquisite paintings from the late 1500s onwards, characterized by vibrant colors and the use of gold and silver leaf.
