The Government Museum in Shimoga is housed within the historic 17th-century Shivappa Nayaka Palace, located on the banks of the Tunga River. It serves as a regional center for the preservation of antiquities from the Keladi, Chalukya, and Hoysala dynasties. The museum is a protected monument under the Karnataka State Department of Archaeology.
The collection features a wide array of stone sculptures, hero stones (Veeragallu), and sati stones. It also contains ancient Kannada inscriptions, palm-leaf manuscripts, coins, and weaponry recovered from nearby archaeological excavations.
The museum is renowned for its extensive collection of 12th-century Hoysala and Jain sculptures, as well as a significant series of inscribed hero stones dating from the 11th to the 16th centuries.

| Notes | While traditionally attributed to the Keladi ruler Shivappa Nayaka, architectural evidence suggests the current rosewood-pillared structure was likely built or significantly modified by Hyder Ali in the 18th century. |
| Artifacts | 12th-century Mahishasura Mardhini sculpture, 14th-century Sun God (Surya) from Kannuru, 12th-century Yoga Narasimha from Harakere, 12th-century Adinath Tirthankara from Gurupura, and various Hoysala-era stone inscriptions. |
