Established in 1977, the Goa State Museum (also known as the State Archaeology Museum) is the state’s premier institution for preserving Goan heritage. Since 2017, it has been temporarily housed in the historic Adil Shah’s Palace (Old Secretariat) in Panaji. The museum centralizes antiquities and art objects that illuminate the ancient historical and cultural traditions of the region.
The museum houses approximately 8,000 artifacts across 14 thematic galleries, including Stone Sculpture, Christian Art, Banerji Art, Religious Expression, and Cultural Anthropology. Collections span from the 4th-century Hindu and Jain sculptures to colonial-era furniture and items from the Goa freedom struggle.
A distinctive collection related to the history of printing, as Goa was the first place in Asia to receive a printing press in 1556. Notable items include early printing machines and plates used for newspapers.
