The museum was founded to house the findings from excavations led by Dr. Veluri Venkata Krishna Sastry starting in 1964. It is located near the Gundlakamma River at the foot of Singarakonda hill, providing essential context to the massive double-terraced Maha Stupa nearby.
The galleries display a rich collection of limestone panels, ancient pottery (black and red ware), coins, and beads. The exhibits focus heavily on the architectural and sculptural remains of the monastic complex, including Viharas and Chaityagruhas.
Brahmi Inscriptions: Rare slabs featuring early Brahmi script that provide insights into Buddhist grants and life. Satavahana Coinage: A dedicated collection of coins that establish the economic links of the site during the Satavahana reign. Hinayana Symbolism: Sculptures depicting the Buddha through symbols like the Bodhi tree, throne, and Dharmachakra, rather than human form.
