Opened on June 4, 2006, in its current building (though established in 2004), the museum is located in Saraswathi Nagar. It was founded to preserve artifacts discovered during regional excavations and to showcase the long history of human habitation in the Penna River basin, which dates back to the Palaeolithic era.
The museum features prehistoric stone tools, terracotta figurines, and ancient burial urns. Its galleries are divided into sections for coinage, epigraphy, and weaponry, including cannons and daggers. It also houses a notable collection of bronze and porcelain objects, including Chinese celadon ware.
Roman Trade Links: The museum houses six Roman gold coins found near the Andhra coast, providing physical evidence of the maritime trade relations between the Satavahana Empire and Rome. Satavahana Sculptures: Features 2nd-century BCE limestone carvings and architectural members displayed in an open-air central courtyard.
