Inaugurated on January 4, 2002, by the then Union Minister for Petroleum, the museum commemorates the centenary of the Digboi Refinery (est. 1901). It is built near Discovery Well No. 1, the first commercially viable oil well in India (1889), and chronicles the evolution of oil exploration in Asia.
The collection includes vintage machinery, early drilling equipment, steam engines, and heavy refinery tools. It also features a wide array of archival photographs, historical documents, and murals depicting the transformation of Digboi from a dense jungle into an industrial township.
Discovery Well No. 1: The original site where oil was first struck in 1889 is preserved within the complex. Colonial Exhibits: Includes a life-sized replica of a British-era petrol station featuring a vintage Ford Prefect car and mannequins of a European couple. WWII Air Raid Shelter: A genuine wartime bunker preserved at the entrance.
