Established in 1928, the DHAS was founded to promote historical research and preserve the antiquities of Assam. It serves as the primary repository for the Ahom-era Buranjis (historical chronicles) and medieval manuscripts, operating under the Directorate of Historical and Antiquarian Studies, Government of Assam.
The collection is primarily textual and archival, featuring thousands of ancient manuscripts, rare historical books, and colonial-era documents. It also includes small collections of antiquarian objects such as copperplate inscriptions and coins.
Ahom Buranjis: Houses the most significant collection of Buranjis (official chronicles) written in Tai-Ahom and Assamese, providing an unbroken history of the Ahom dynasty (1228–1826). The collection includes rare manuscripts on Sanchipat (agar wood bark) and Tulapat (handmade paper).
