Established in 1957, the museum is a vital part of the School of Designs in Srinagar. It functions under the administrative control of the Directorate of Handicrafts, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, aimed at preserving traditional craft techniques while providing innovative design prototypes to local artisans.
The collection includes a vast range of traditional Kashmiri handicrafts such as Papier-mâché, walnut wood carvings, Kani shawls, carpets, and copperware. It also houses rare specimens of Sozni embroidery and Namdha rugs.
19th Century Artifacts: Features rare 19th-century silver-alloy tumblers with enamel work and historic Sozni-embroidered pashmina samples (including a notable 1937 piece) that showcase the evolution of needlework in the valley.
