Established in 1892 as a district museum and reorganized as a site museum in 1967 (with further development in 1982), it is housed in the historic Naqqar Khana (Trumpet House) of the Gol Gumbaz complex. The building itself is an architectural marvel of the Adil Shahi period, featuring elevated platforms and lofty arches.
The museum houses artifacts from the 6th to 18th centuries CE, including Brahmanical and Jaina sculptures, inscriptions in various languages (Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Kannada), weaponry, coins, miniature paintings, and China porcelain.
The museum features a significant collection of Adil Shahi dynasty artifacts, including rare Persian and Arabic manuscripts of the Holy Quran and an impressive arsenal of medieval weaponry and chain mail armor.
