Museum Introduction

This museum is the ancestral home (Dyodhi) of the legendary Kathak exponents Kalka Prasad and Bindadin Maharaj, who were the architects of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak. Situated in the Wazirganj area, the house served as a vibrant cultural hub where the art form was refined under the patronage of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. It was restored and converted into a memorial museum to preserve the legacy of the Maharaj family, including the late Padma Vibhushan Pt. Birju Maharaj.

General Collections

The collection includes rare photographs of the Maharaj family, traditional Kathak costumes, musical instruments used in performances (such as the Sarangi, Tabla, and Pakhawaj), and historical documents related to the Lucknow Gharana.

Unique Historical Collections

The museum preserves the original living quarters and the practice hall (Riyaaz-gah) where the maestros taught. It houses personal belongings of Bindadin Maharaj, including his handwritten Thumris and Bhajans which are still foundational to Kathak performances today.
