Established in 1964 by Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia in memory of Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia, the museum occupies 35 rooms of the opulent Jai Vilas Palace. Built in 1874, the palace was designed by Sir Michael Filose, blending Italian, Tuscan, and Corinthian architectural styles to serve as the Scindia dynasty's residence.
A vast collection of royal memorabilia including European furniture, Belgian glass, Persian carpets, palanquins, vintage carriages, and a massive armory of Maratha and Mughal weapons.
The world-famous silver model train (Solid Silver Electric Train) which traveled along the dining table to serve cigars and brandy to guests, and two of the world's largest crystal chandeliers hanging in the Durbar Hall.
