Established in 1984 by the Department of Archaeology and Museums, the Government Museum Jaisalmer is located on Police Line Road in the heart of the "Golden City." It was specifically designed to highlight the multifaceted traditional, cultural, and geological heritage of the Great Thar Desert. The museum is housed in a structure built from beautiful local yellow sandstone, mirroring the city's iconic architecture.
The museum's repertoire includes 72 stone sculptures, 13 paintings, 65 coins, eight inscriptions, and nearly 180 embroidered dresses and handicrafts. It also maintains a significant collection of medieval manuscripts, ancient weapons, and folk musical instruments that reflect the daily lives and martial history of the people of Jaisalmer.
Marine and Wood Fossils: A distinctive geological collection featuring prehistoric fossils that provide evidence of the Thar Desert's underwater past millions of years ago. Kiradu and Lodurva Sculptures: Rare 12th-century stone sculptures recovered from the ancient townships of Kiradu and Lodurva. Great Indian Bustard Exhibit: A specialized glass case housing a specimen of the State Bird of Rajasthan (Godawan), highlighting the region's unique biodiversity.

| Notes | The museum building is frequently described as resembling a royal palace. It is located near other major landmarks like the Jaisalmer Fort and Gadsisar Lake. Unlike the Jaisalmer War Museum (which is located on the Jodhpur highway), this museum focuses on the cultural and archaeological history of the region. |
